Colors!

 

After working with my preschooler on word families for many weeks, I decided it was time to mix it up a little, so I decided to put together a little something for her to learn and practice color words! It's a fun set of worksheets that let her trace, color, make, find, and draw 10 different color words! I also made a few extra review pages to use when we finished the individual colors! She loves cutting, gluing, and coloring, so these were perfect!

April Currently

I'm not a fan of April Fool's Day. I don't like practical jokes at all, so a whole day dedicated to them is just awful! I think it comes from me getting embarrassed so easily, and I get embarrassed for other people easily too! But I am glad it's April nevertheless! I'm joining up with Farley from Oh' Boy 4th Grade for this month's Currently!

 

Listening - my little 2 year old has had a fever the past few days and all she wants to do is sit in my lap! Sweet....but a little hard to do with 3 other ones to take care of!

Loving - my husband was gone for almost 2 weeks on a scouting trip to the Middle East (we are trying to figure out where we are headed next) and it sure is nice to have him back!

Thinking - I've registered and picked my sessions for the TpT conference and I am so excited to meet everyone and hear the speakers!!

Wanting - The past 3 weeks we have been passing our sicky germs around and around and I'm ready for them to go away!

Needing - I finally have dental insurance for the first time in forever so I guess it's time to schedule an appointment!

Hours and last day - Well all the momma's know that my day is much longer than just 9-2, but those are the hours that we get school done in! My day is actually from around 6am to 8pm with the kids! As far as the last day....probably around the beginning of June, but we usually do stuff through the summer anyway. I like to have more of a relaxed schedule and go year round, so we end up doing about 4 days a week during the school year, but continue to work a few days a week during the summer! Then I don't feel bad if we need to take some time off during the year!

 

Water, Water, Everywhere

 

I don't know what it is about water...but my kids LOVE any activity that involves playing with it! I love it too, because it's free (or cheap anyway) and even if it makes a mess, it just dries right up!

Here are some of our favorite things to do with water:

1. Washing dishes - I put some plastic silverware and dishes in the sink with some water and a tiny bit of soap and let them have at it! Plus it's good practice for the real thing later on!

 

 

2. Sink or float - fill a bucket or Tupperware container with water and find household objects (that you don't mind getting wet) to test if they sink or float. Make predictions before you try each object. Great way to incorporate science!

 

3. Paint with water - get paint brushes and a cup of water and paint the sidewalk or fence! You can make it educational by having kids write their name, sight words, or even try math problems - get the answer before it dries up :-)

 

4. Play with ice - one of our favorites during the summer! (Do your kids ALWAYS want to play with the ice in their cups at restaurants...or is it just mine?) Dump some ice on the ground and play with it! Try stomping on it, writing with it, or doing some melting experiments (different sizes, different places, sun vs. shade, etc.)

 

 

5. Pouring fun - sometimes I just grab some cups and different size plastic containers and put them outside with a bucket of water. Pouring water between containers is somehow very satisfying for little ones.

 

6. Have a car wash - my son especially loves this! Set up a car wash with some soapy water and towels, and let the kids drive their matchbox cars through! We also added our car ramp next to it so the cars could come splashing down.

 

 

 

7. Make a Boat - give them some aluminum foil and have them try to fold it into a boat that will float on the water. Use washers or marbles to see which boat can hold the most without sinking!  

 

8. Water Races - set up each person (or team if you've got a lot of kids) with 2 containers - one filled with water and something to scoop with and the other across the yard. Have a relay to see who can get all the water from one container to the next, one scoop at a time! You could also use a big sponge to transfer water instead of scooping it!

 

9. Set up a marble tower and pour water through it! My toddlers always want to put those pesky marbles in their mouths, so this is a super fun way we can still make use of the tower. (Fun for bathtime too!)

 

10. Another one for summer - freeze some small objects/toys in a big block of ice, or individually in ice cubes, then let the kids play with it outside until it melts enough to get the toys out! You can use some warm water to pour over it to speed up the process if needed!

Top o' the morning to ya!

I didn't really explain what Spring Break is to my kids. They know we didn't have Life Group and soccer practice this week because of it....but I might have failed to mention that other students don't have school! We really didn't do much work ourselves, we took one morning off to go to the zoo, another whole day to meet some of my family at a nearby campsite for the day, and tomorrow we're off for a short vacation to Galveston! But, we did spend a little time learning about St. Patrick and why he has a holiday. We read a short biography about him and talked about leprechauns and rainbows :)

I cut out pots from construction paper and glued them on some white paper, then had the kids use their fingertips in paint to make a rainbow!

Then we used gold craft paint to dot on some gold coins. This picture is when it was still a little wet, but when it dried, it was super shiny and looked great! 

And you know they love the mystery pictures!

And next time I'm at the store, remind me to buy PLAIN paper plates! We keep doing these great paper plate crafts that end up with flowers or designs all over them *sigh*.  At least the kids don't care, they just love craft time :-)

One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish

There are so many things to do to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss and Read Across America! This week we read several of his books and did some activities and crafts!

After reading The Cat in the Hat we made -at word hats, posed as Thing 1 and Thing 2, and drew a picture to this prompt, "If the Cat in the Hat visited our house..."

We read There's a Wocket in My Pocket and made up our own silly rhymes and illustrated them, like "There's a SMED in my BED," and "There's a DANTRY in the PANTRY."

Finally, we read One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish and I created a fun activity pack that uses Goldfish crackers to go with it! We sorted, tallied, graphed, worked on sight words, made a cute fishbowl craft, and had a great snack :-)

We also made this fun fishbowl craft. Cut the top off of a paper plate and tape it to the bottom. Paint and let dry, then glue some goldfish crackers to make your fishbowl!

March Currently

February seemed to draaaag by this year! Maybe it was the weather and being stuck inside the house a lot! But I know now that spring is almost here, our days will likely fly by! I'm excited about this month for sure! We have a lot of fun stuff we can do with school, plus we are planning a family trip to Galveston during Spring Break!

President's Day!

There's so many fun things you can do to learn about the Presidents and celebrate President's Day, but we just did a couple of simple things this year. I think in a few years the kids will be more ready to tackle the information, but for now we just stuck to knowing that George Washington & Abraham Lincoln were presidents and they each did special things to help our country. We did this color by number of George Washington and then did a paper plate craft to make his face! Things always look cuter on Pinterest...but oh well, they had fun :-)

Since we lived in a country that had a king (Jordan) for several years, it was a great springboard for discussion about the differences between a king and a president. They were asking some great questions! I love curious little minds :-)
